  Declaring War in '04

Past Permian Head Football Coaches

John Wilkins was inducted into the Texas High School Coaches Association Hall of Honor on July 30, 2003 at the Radisson Hotel in Fort Worth.  Sporting an impressive 148-16-6 record, two state championships, and 10 district titles, he is now retired and the endless hours in the coach's office and sidelines have come to an end.  Wilkins had a hand in five of the six Permianís state titles.  He was an assistant coach on the 1972 title team, was head coach for the 1980 and 1984 state champs, and was ECISD Athletic Director when the Panthers won the 1989 and 1991 state titles.  Does anyone remember the "A.G." nickname?

Wilkins was just 30 years old when he was hired as the fifth head coach in the programís history, taking over after Gil Bartosh left for Texas A&M after leading the Panthers to an undefeated state title in 1972.  The good news was that the Permian system had been put in place by Gene Mayfield in 1965 and continued during Bartoshís two seasons in 1971-72.  Still, Wilkins was a rookie head coach taking over the year after a state championship with virtually no experienced players returning ó not exactly an easy situation.  Wilkins left the Permian football program in early 1986 to succeed the retiring Jack Brewer as the Ector County ISD Athletics Director, a job he kept until retiring from the school district in 1998.  The last four years of Wilkinsí career was spent as Athletic Director at Midland Trinity.  He also got one last taste of coaching in 2000 and 2001, when he took over as Head Coach of Trinityís football program before retiring for good.

There are 34 of Wilkinsí former Panther players who are coaching football now, and over a handful of his assistants in head coaching positions across the state.  A few of the more recognized names include:  Tam Hollingshead, Mike Belew, and Darren Allman are all now coaching the Temple Wildcats;  Randy Quisenberry, a 1975 Permian graduate, has compiled a 52-29 record as a head coach at Odessa High and Abilene Cooper;  Dale Carr, a 1982 graduate who played on Permianís 1980 state championship team, has been the head coach of Tyler Junior Collegeís football team since 1996 and has coached the Apaches for 13 years overall; Ed Hickman and Huey Chancellor coached in El Campo before moving on to Bellville; Gary Gaines, who is head football coach at Abilene Christian University; and Randy Mayes is in his second season at Flower Mound Marcus.

Coaches in attendance for the induction were:  Bartosh, Belew, Gaines, Ken Herring, Hickman, Hollingshead, Mayes, Quisenberry, Mike Stephens, and Dan Swaim.
