ODESSA - Permian is once again in search of a new head football coach. This comes after coach Gary Gaines announced on Tuesday afternoon that he was stepping down. Gaines said he would continue working at Permian through January 8.

Gary GainesIn his first tenure at Permian, Gaines guided the Panthers to one of the six state championships in 1989. The 'Friday Night Lights' book and movie chronicled the Mojo trek through the 1988 season. Gaines left Permian in 1990 to take a job at Texas Tech. After three seasons, he returned to the district to head coach Abilene High (1994-95). From there, became a Bobcat head coach from 1996-99 at San Angelo Central.

Gaines revisited the college ranks in 2000 to head the football program at Abilene Christian. Three years later, he was back in Odessa as the ECISD athletics director during the 2005 and 2006 school years. After a brief stint as Lubbock ISD's AD, returned to Permian to take over for Darren Allman as the Mojo main man in 2009.

This last session ended up well short of the success of his first tenure at Permian. During the last four seasons, the Panthers landed slightly past a .500 mark with a 23-21 record. That included winning only one playoff game and no district titles. In fact, this past season the Permian finished 5-6, and got eliminated from post-season 34-33 in a first-round.

Gaines has compiled a 127-93-5 record in 20 seasons as a high school head coach.
