Tascosa Uses Late Rally To Defeat Permian
Friday, October 14, 2016 10:18

AMARILLO — After watching Amarillo Tascosa take a 7-0 first quarter lead, Permian erupted with 13 unanswered second quarter points to take a 13-7 halftime lead over the Rebels at Dick Bivins Stadium.  The Rebels scored with just 28 seconds remaining to rally past the Panthers 21-20 in Friday night's District 2-6A showdown.

Permian answered with two field goals of 19-yards and 28-yards by Jacob James in the second quarter.  The Panthers also put together a 79-yard, 6-play drive that included a 73-yard pass-and-catch from Steve Steen to Hunter Hawkins.  That would be capped off by a 2-yard Ed Williams touchdown run to give Mojo a 13-7 halftime lead.
Tascosa ate up half of the third quarter on a 14-play, 75-yard scoring drive that was concluded on a 9-yard TD run to regain the lead at 14-13.  After a 3-and-out by the Panthers, the Rebels coughed up the ball at their own 37-yard line late in the quarter.  Permian used the remainder of the third and the start of the fourth quarter to eventually convert the Tascosa miscue into points.  Steen would cap off a 11-play scoring drive on a 2-yard QB keeper to give the Panthers a 20-14 lead.
Again the Mojo defense came up big snuffing out a fourth-and-six attempt just outside the redzone on the Mojo 26.  Permian took over possession but was forced to punt the ball away after running six plays.  The punt pinned the Rebels at their own 9-yard line with a little over two minutes remaining in regulation.  Tascosa methodically marched the ball near midfield before busting loose on a 32 yard run.  On a first-and-ten at the Panthers' 33 yard line, Zac Zimmer hit Bert Morris on a 33-yard TD pass to tie the game at 20-20 with under 30 seconds to play.  The extra point followed and gave the Rebels a 21-20 lead.  Permian had one last chance but the Hail Mary pass was picked off at the 2-yard line to end the game as the clock ran out.  Steen led Permian rushers with 105 yards, while Hawkins finished the game with 131 receiving yards.
Permian will host the San Angelo Central Bobcats next Friday, October 21 at Ratliff Stadium.  Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.  The Panthers will need to win-out the three remaining district games to have a shot at post-season.  Breast cancer awareness month or not, there's only one color to wear to this coming week's game and that's ALL BLACK!  Time to Burn the Angry Orange!
